An Excursion into Architecture

Part I Architecture Student

About

me

I am a passionate Part I Architecture Student with an interest in creating harmonious synergies between anthropology and ecology to form a built environment that works with and around nature, rather than against it. I have embarked on my architectural journey with an undergraduate Architecture degree, including a sandwich year in practise; so please join me as I take you through the highlights of my experience.

putney macrovision

Putney, London - England

2023 - 4th Year Undergrad Group Project

Axonometric Drawing of the Macrovision done by me

The macrovision sees a version of Putney with 3 main new ways to experience the space. Our studio lab, AAA, refers to these as the Highline, Highstreet and Lowline (More on p4). These 3 new or updated (in the case of the high-street) spaces have been developed by AAA Lab to revive the space and bring back its original character of green space. We carried out extensive research on the area and developed this vision in a team setting. We have indicated the following set of values for our vision including:

- Revival

- Pedestrianisation

- Placemaking

- Diversity

- Climate Awareness

- Activation

Rain Garden

Journey through the site

In this project the addition and subtraction of land - the rain garden protruding into the river and small detention basins being introduced on the land- plays with the threshold and balance between the water and the land, pulling the water in and pushing the land out; Land that is carved away from the embankment is re-used where land is pushed out, and leftover clay sediments are used to form tiles for the façade of the garden centre. The ebb and flow of this design embraces nature rather than working against it, making use of nature’s rhythm and creating a harmonious synergy that is mutually beneficial.

The Friends of the Elderly care home is a Health Centre building which replaced the old Bedfont Centre for client and care home provider Friends of the Elderly. It consists of a GP Practice on the ground floor and community spaces on first floor with staff facilities. The New Copford Place project saw a one storey extension of this building, valued at approximately £1 million, which accommodates:

·12 new residential rooms,

·shared dining/ sitting/ activities areas,

·staff facility

·admin rooms

as part of a dementia unit.

THERMAE HOUSE

Shoreditch, London - England

2021 - 2nd Year Undergrad

Perspective Section showing Residential Blocks and the Retail Zone Under the Viaduct

Site Analysis/ Context

My building includes co-working, co-housing and communal spaces which aim to tackle mental health issues and provide equal treatment for all.

According to WHO there is a chronic underfunding of mental health: prior to the pandemic, countries were spending less than 2 per cent of their national health budgets on mental health, and struggling to meet their populations’ needs.

Worse yet, what mental health treatment is provided is not distributed evenly across the population.

The spaces throughout my design use forms of therapy other than merely verbal therapy such as art therapy, physical exercise, massages, aroma therapy, saunas, thermal bathing and a rage room to combat mental health problems for demographics which may not usually have access to such therapies.

Nymphae House is a co-working/ co-living space for an aquatic botanist. Given the nature of the client’s profession the concept took inspiration from an aquatic plant: the lilypad. I researched their adaptations for buoyancy and applied the same principals to the form of the house. It is designed to float on water, is flat and rounded to mirror the large surface area that lilpads encompass to keep afloat.A green roof covers the joint house and botany lab including a large roof light shapes like a water lily. Not only does the building merge with the green surroundings of Abbey Park Leicester, but it utilises the environment for sustainable living (e.g. re-use of water, cycling nutrients, making full use of ambient energy, creating space for natural diversity, the use of open spaces, lots of natural light)
